  • This Is My Puppy

    Felicity Brooks

Hardcover (Usborne Books, Jan. 1, 2012)
This is a brand new edition of this gorgeous touchy-feely title with a sound chip. It encourages children to talk about different parts of a puppy, including his shiny brown nose, squashy paws and long fluffy ears, while finding out what he likes to do all day. It is presented with a repetitive story which children can interact with by pressing the sound-chip on the page to make the puppy say 'woof'. It is warmly illustrated by Matsumi Furukawa. It is ideal for sharing with young children.

Saturday 21st May 1842 Something terrible has happened. I can scarcely bring myself to write the words. I AM TO START AT THE MILL ON MONDAY. "You said never," I cried to Mother. Her face was white. "Oh Eliza," she said. "I'm so sorry. If there was anything I could have done..." "Where am I to work?" I demanded. The room was so quiet that I could hear myself breathe. "In the carding room. Sickness. They need more hands." I wasn't Eliza any more, just a pair of hands. Factory hands.

October 1415 What I saw when we looked down into that valley made my stomach churn, my heart pound and my legs feel like they were made from bowstrings. There below us, about half a mile away, for almost as far as I could see in all directions, was a vast sea of grey steel. Moving before us was the most enormous host of men I had ever laid eyes on in my life. • D-Day

    Bryan Perrett

Paperback (Gardners Books, May 31, 2004)
Jim Dodd is an 18-year-old Second Lieutenant in an infantry battalion, a former Territorial unit. He is younger than many of the men in his platoon, but earns their respect by handling the men well on exercise and looking after their welfare. At the beginning of 1944, his battalion is mobilised and a veteran of the desert war and former POW is sent in as commander. He drives the company mercilessly, flaying them with criticism. After rehearsing its role in the landings on the Normandy coast, Jim's battalion joins the huge armada crossing the Channel, fighters and bombers accompanying them overhead to pound the coastal defences as the landing crafts go in. By the end of D Day, the British and Canadians have established themselves firmly on Juno, Gold and Sword beaches, and the Americans on Utah beach (having sustained heavy losses on Omaha beach - the arena of action in Saving Private Ryan). Jim's battalion goes on to join the fighting in the French hinterland, where Jim realises that his commander's ruthless methods result in a lower loss of life than other companies. Jim goes on to take part in two major operations (Totalise and Tractable) to smash through the German lines. His task is to secure a village and its crossroads in the centre of the enemy escape route. What follows is based on the real-life struggle for Mont Ormel. Jim's company is subjected to constant attacks from the Waffen SS and, as the only unwounded officer left, Jim finds himself in charge of the situation...

  • Civil War; Thomas Adamson, England 1643-1650

    Vince Cross

Paperback (Gardners Books, Aug. 31, 2004)
SEPTEMBER 1644 My head was down as I rode into the teeth of a gale beside Edward and I struggled to understand the meaning of the sudden shouts of anxiety from in front of us. I looked up and saw horses rearing and turning. Then I heard a volley of shots ring out, though I could not see who fired them for the smoke that suddenly hung over the road. At last, and nearly too late, I obeyed a harshly issued instruction to dismount and take shelter behind the wagons if I valued my life. I felt rather than heard the musket fire that might have been the end of me, as it ripped the air apart and shredded the canvas behind my head...
